He ended up saying that, “next time he should just yell at me more often so that I can drive better”, but what he doesn’t know is that I used selective listening to focus on my driving. In the end he ended up rating me a 9 because the rest of the drive was “perfect”. I listened to him once in a while, but my eyes were on the road the whole time. I was already feeling nervous about my driving and I decided to shut him off of my mind and forget that he was there because he was distracting me. I tend to get really nervous while driving with my father and when I had to take a right turn, I made a “bad” turn and it was only about two minutes in and he started raising his voice and telling me how horrible that turn was. It was off to a really good start, I checked my side mirrors, I checked my top mirror, I repositioned the driver’s seat so that I could see the road clearly, and lastly, I started the engine. We had some time in our schedule for me to drive and take my time driving (I’m on the process of learning how to drive). I was in the car with my father and we were heading to Campus because I commute from Salinas everyday. One recent situation that I can remember when I used selective listening was today. I always give them positive feedback and I try to make them feel like they aren’t alone, that they have somebody here who cares for them. If I see that someone really needs me to be their for them I will. I use this type of listening mostly when I’m preoccupied with doing other things, when I am overwhelmed, when I am having a bad day, or just because the conversation is something that I’ve heard before and its plainly annoying to listen to the same thing all over again. Selective listening is a part of me that I tend to do often, but not because I want to. How could you have avoided this selective listening behavior.
